Visiting Warehorne Vineyard

Warehorne is a young vineyard above Romney Marsh near Hamstreet, and it does something most Kent vineyards don’t. It concentrates on still wine, red especially, sold as Oasthouse and including reds from the Swiss grape Divico. The weekend cellar door is a short walk from Ham Street station.

About Warehorne

The family planted the first 15,000 vines in May 2020 on a slope in Warehorne village that looks south over Romney Marsh. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris went in, with some Divico. Then 2,000 Cabernet Noir vines followed in 2021, and 8,000 more Divico in 2022. The vineyard now covers 10.2 hectares.

Friends, volunteers and neighbours helped pick the first harvest by hand in 2022, which came to 9.5 tonnes of grapes. The first vintage went on sale in 2023, the year the cellar door opened, and in 2024 the vineyard turned up on ITV’s Love Your Weekend. The owner, Peter, often takes the tastings himself.

Few English vineyards put red wine first, and Warehorne does. Divico is a disease-resistant Swiss variety bred for cool climates, and it gives deep-coloured reds. The Pinot Noir has done best so far. Oasthouse Pinot Noir 2022 took Silver at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2024 and at the WineGB Awards, and was Highly Commended for Kent Wine of the Year at the Taste of Kent Awards 2024. Oasthouse Divico won Bronze at the Decanter Awards 2025.

The wines

Apart from a single sparkling rosé, everything is still, and all of it comes from the estate’s own fruit under the Oasthouse label. Try the Divico. It’s a full-bodied red with blackcurrant and black cherry, and you won’t find many like it in England. Pinot Noir is the other red, and Estate Red Reserve blends the two, 60% Divico to 40% Pinot Noir. On the lighter side there is Estate White (made from Chardonnay), an Estate Rosé and a Pinot Gris. The Oasthouse Sparkling Rosé, from Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, is made by the Charmat method. Most of the wines are vegan, and bottles run from about £18 to £28. Where to buy them.

Tours and tastings at Warehorne

The cellar door is a weekend affair. Tours and seated tastings are sold through the online shop, but in October 2026 neither had any dates on sale, so email if you want to fix a visit. Private tours are arranged the same way. You can buy wine after a tour or tasting and pick up online orders there too. Look for the vineyard next to Warehorne Oast on Warehorne Road. Coming from Hamstreet, the welcome sign is on the right, and the drive leads to the cellar door. From the vines you look across the marsh towards Dungeness. If you would rather walk, footpaths run up from Hamstreet, which is also the nearest place to eat.
