About Chapel Down
The first vines went in on the Tenterden site in April 1977. It has since become the home of Chapel Down, which calls itself England’s leading wine producer, and the estate at Small Hythe is the part of the business most visitors see.
Chapel Down’s own vineyards are mainly on the Kent Downs, where Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Bacchus grow on south-facing chalk soils in a maritime climate. It also buys fruit from long-term partner growers across Kent, Sussex and Essex. The premium Kit’s Coty Collection comes from a single vineyard at Kit’s Coty on Bluebell Hill, near Aylesford. The Discovery Series, started in 2021, uses experimental plantings and newer winemaking techniques. Chapel Down is a founder member of the Sustainable Wines of Great Britain scheme.
In July 2026 it was named Best Large Cellar Door at the first WineGB Cellar Door Awards, and its Grand Reserve 2019 won the Classic Cuvée Trophy and Best Sustainable WineGB Wine. You may have drunk it without knowing, since it is the official sparkling wine of the England and Wales Cricket Board and the official English sparkling wine of Ascot Racecourse.
The wines
The sparkling wine is what Chapel Down is known for. It runs from the non-vintage Brut and Rosé to the vintage Grand Reserve, whose 2019 won the Classic Cuvée Trophy at the 2026 WineGB Awards. The Kit’s Coty Collection is the premium single-vineyard range, topped by the Kit’s Coty Coeur de Cuvée, which is the one wine you can’t choose for the walk-in flight. Still wines include Bacchus and Flint Dry. The lighter sparkling wines go under the A Touch of Sparkle name, and the Discovery Series covers small experimental releases. Where to buy them.
