West Kent vineyards to visit

Six vineyards in the west of the county, round Westerham, the Darent valley, Gravesend and Maidstone. Coming from London, these are the quickest Kent vineyards to get to.

West Kent in brief

  • Two belong to the Wine Garden of England: Squerryes and Yotes Court.
  • The Mount is a ten-minute walk from Shoreham station, which makes it the easiest Kent vineyard to reach by train.
  • Silverhand, near Gravesend, is one of the largest vineyards in the county and opens its cellar door seven days a week.

Details checked in October 2026.

The vineyards

Starting with Squerryes at Westerham and ending at Yotes Court near Maidstone.

Squerryes

Westerham

Squerryes makes sparkling wine from vines planted in 2006 on a 2,500-acre estate that the same family has owned for eight generations.

Visiting: The winery restaurant holds two AA rosettes. Tasting experiences run alongside a cellar door and deli.

The Mount Vineyard

Shoreham, near Sevenoaks

The Mount grows eight grape varieties on ten acres of chalk, part of a 104-acre estate in the Darent Valley.

Visiting: Tastings run all year on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 12.30pm, 2.30pm and 7pm. They cost £38, last about an hour and a half and often sell out, so book ahead. From late May to late September there is also a 4.30pm tour and tasting at £43. In summer the tastings are on the Oak Terrace, and from October to April they move into the Wine Loft. Tastings are for adults only, but children are welcome in the restaurant (there is a large pond on site). The courtyard bar and restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday 12pm to 11pm, with the kitchen until 9pm, and Sunday 12pm to 6pm, with the kitchen until 5pm. The Flint Bar and tipi reopen in May. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in all guest areas, and Shoreham station is a ten-minute walk.

Silverhand Estate

Luddesdown, near Gravesend

Silverhand has more than 600 acres under vine on a 900-acre estate on the North Downs, which it says is the largest single organic vineyard in the UK. Sheep and a conservation team work the land alongside the vines.

Visiting: The cellar door and wine bar open seven days a week, 11am to 6pm from Sunday to Thursday and 10am to 10pm on Friday and Saturday. A guided tasting of five wines is £20. The tour we would pick is the vineyard and winery tour by vintage Land Rover, £45, from Friday to Sunday. Walking tours run on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and picnics in the vines from Thursday to Sunday. On the first Sunday of the month there is a history tour of Luddesdown Court, and on the last Thursday a cheese pairing evening. Online booking has been unreliable, so the estate asks people to book a tour by phone or email. Only assistance dogs get a mention, so ask before bringing a dog, and the ground is uneven in places. A pick-up from Ebbsfleet International costs £50 and needs a week’s notice.

Mereworth Wines

Mereworth

Mereworth makes sparkling wine from its own vineyards at Wateringbury.

Visiting: The winery bar, kitchen and shop open Thursday and Friday 12pm to 11pm, Saturday 9am to 11pm and Sunday 9am to 7pm, and afternoon tea is served on each of those days. Monday to Wednesday is by appointment and for private functions. Guided tours with a tasting cost £30 midweek and £35 at weekends. There is also a Friday evening tour with a tasting and pizza at £48, and a winter wine experience at £35. All of them are booked ahead and for over-18s, and none is suitable for children or pets, though well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar and on the terrace.

Yotes Court Vineyard

Mereworth, near Maidstone

Yotes Court was planted in 2016 on a former fruit farm and was WineGB’s Best Newcomer in 2021.

Visiting: From 1 April to 1 November the cellar door wine barn and paddock lawn open Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm to 5.30pm, except on bank holiday Mondays, and walk-ins are welcome. The self-guided wine flight is £16 and needs no booking. Booked visits start at £27.50 for a vineyard tour with that flight, then £32 for a tour with a guided tasting, £37.50 for a guided tasting with light lunch and £48.50 for a tour, tasting and lunch. On one Friday a month from April to September there is a garden tour at £40. From 2 November to 19 December the tasting room opens on Friday and Saturday, 12pm to 5pm, for wine by the glass or bottle, flights and light nibbles, and the shop opens Monday to Thursday, 12pm to 5pm. Children and dogs on leads are welcome in the wine barn, on the lawn and for picnics in the vines. Under-18s go free on the 11.30am tour with a self-guided flight, though not on guided tastings.

Red Hill Farm Estate

Wateringbury, near Maidstone

A vineyard and winery that grew from a single vine to more than 27,000, making still and sparkling wines on the estate.

Visiting: The Terrace Bar is open Thursday to Sunday for wine by the glass or bottle, coffee and cheese or charcuterie, with no tour needed. A one-hour vineyard tour and tasting (£35) runs on the first and third Saturday of the month from April to September, and Bottle and Blanket picnics among the vines (£30) run at weekends from May to August; book ahead.

Planning your visit

From Sevenoaks. Take a taxi to Squerryes near Westerham for a booked morning tour (Oxted station works too). Then get the train from Sevenoaks to Shoreham and walk ten minutes to The Mount, which serves lunch from Wednesday to Sunday and runs tastings from Friday to Sunday.

Mereworth and Yotes Court. These two are a few minutes apart near Maidstone, so they pair well. Yotes Court’s cellar door opens Wednesday to Sunday from April to 1 November with no need to book, and its tasting room on Friday and Saturday until 19 December. Mereworth opens Thursday to Sunday. Yotes Court suggests coming by train to Tonbridge. West Malling and Wateringbury are nearer, but you would need a pre-booked taxi.

Silverhand. It is near Gravesend, well away from the rest, so give it a visit of its own. The cellar door and wine bar open every day.
